Scout and nimble reviews8/8/2023 The Recon Scout misses the palm swell that Kyle talks about but its rounded shape is quite comfortable in the handle. The slabs are nominally contoured but that is about it. There is a thick piece of steel sandwiched between two micarta slabs. Until I handled the Recon I didn't get what he meant. He often describes just how lacking the "slab handled" knives are in the chopper category. One of the cohosts, Kyle, is a hand surgeon so naturally he is a little fixated on handles. If you listen to the Knife Journal podcast you get a lesson in handle design. There is not a lot to do on a fixed blade, but what there is was done well here, surprisingly well given the intended task. Even the guard, which is often chintzy, was well done here. The piped lanyard hole is a nice touch, something a bit more than what you'd expect from a knife in this range. The black coating, which I hate, was even and thick. Ultimately, the Recon Scout is a bit too thick.įor a knife so brutal, the finish is quite impressive. It seems to me that 1/8 inch is a little too thin and 5/16 is too thick. This is a knife and not a pry bar, but in some tasks, such as batonning I found it to be too brutishly thick. There is never a second, not even a second, when you will think the knife will bend or break even in the hardest chopping tasks, but stock this thick does impact your ability to cut. 5/16 inch thick is quite a slab of steel and something that does effect performance. There is thick and then there is overbuilt and then there is the Recon Scout. So why the 1 instead of a 2? Here is why: The blade shape and handle design are dead simple and dead effective. You'll be impressed at how well the Recon Scout stacks up even against much more expensive choppers. saw debate for a second and look within the realm of choppers. Twitter Review Summary: A knife by and for cavemen-smart cavemen. Here is a link to Blade HQ, where you can find the Recon Scout, and all proceeds benefit the site when you purchase things through this link: Here is a video review (an old Nutnfancy video, back when he talked for 10 gloriously focused and rant-free minutes). This version of the Recon Scout, with a black blade and SK-5, costs around $117. There is a high end version of this knife with San Mai VG-1 steel. It was better than the Spyderco Rock I had in for review over the summer. It blew away my current big chopper, the Ontario RD-7, by a wide margin. One slight drawback keeps it from getting a perfect score, but make no mistake-you will be very happy with the Recon Scout. The Recon Scout proves just how good Cold Steel's stuff can be and it is one of the best choppers I have had the fortunate to use. Diana Harris and S and N deserve 5 stars.I have reviewed three Cold Steel products thus far and all have been capable cutters, but none had that extra level of attention that sent it to the top of the scoring scale. So, all it all, it wasn’t a smooth transaction and product not perfect but I couldn’t be happier with the customer service provided. I am receiving a discount and am very happy with this resolution. I hate when you have to retell everything to someone different every time. And it’s important she carried on through the whole process. Again, very responsive and extremely professional and helpful. She was awesome in guiding me through a process of sending videos and submitting a claim. But, dresser had issues with workmanship and although I am not someone to complain, I contacted S and N and worked with Diana Harris. I LOVE the style and look of my Sydney 6 drawer dresser and it’s just what I wanted. The white glove delivery worked perfectly and again great communication helped. My Sydney dresser was delayed 4 months, likely not S and N fault, annoying… but I was very pleased with status updates through email and phone. I would absolutely purchase from S&N again!ĭresser had issues but 5 stars for customer service! The measurements were slightly off (everything was a little shorter than listed), but they still worked perfectly for our table. The color is just as pictured online, and they are comfy too! I sit at our table and work everyday, and I am able to do so comfortably from these chairs. Let’s talk about the chairs! It’s always a little risky ordering furniture you’ve never been able to see or try out before, but these are fantastic and I’m so glad I went through with them. I was very impressed with their communication. The shipping took just over a month, however, S&N was very kind and quick to provide info when I reached out with questions. The ETA for shipping was “end of May,” and they did in fact ship on May 26th! This was the only experience I’ve had with a furniture company actually shipping out when they said they would. At the end of February, I ordered the Portia dining chairs in Safari green.
